Up to my eyeballs
On the last work day in June, I'm up to my eyeballs in code, bugs, etc. I'm trying not to scream. I take it as a testament to how much I have changed that I haven't had a panic attack yet.
My supervisor has also decided it is time to have my second committee meeting. I'm hopeful all will go well, but quite leary because of what happened the last time (6 more months of work assigned). But I just hope they are actually all available at one time. That in itself would be a miracle.

Its the little things
In the past 20 minutes I have made 1 discovery and gotten 1 very tiny feature in my code to work. This has made me disproportionately happy. I cannot quite explain why.
The discovery: in the debug mode I can actually recompile individual classes that are not currently in use while my program is running. How cool is that?
The tiny feature: my code now counts down the time you have to resolve you problem.
I will be back here tomorrow, may good things small and large continue to happen with my code.

Speaker ideas
I'm on a committee at school called Finding Common Ground. This group aims to produce programming which encourages civil discourse and understanding of individuals from different backgrounds and ideologies. We are looking for ideas for kick off speakers.
Last year I think we made the mistake of going for a huge (read expensive name) and spending all our time and effort on just this one thing. So while everyone else is focused on really big names, I think we should aim for more affordable individuals who are actually annd actively involved in working with diverse groups to come to consensus.
Any ideas?

Bugs, bugs everywhere
Yes, I'm in that beloved stage of coding -- bug fixing. I've just got one more major algorithm to write then it is all about generating scenarios and fixing bugs. And boy does my code have a lot of bugs. Most of them aren't fatal, just annoying. I had a colleague play with my program for about 15 minutes. I spotted a bug about ever 30 seconds...

Travel
I've been traveling for what seems like two continuous weeks. I didn't plan it this way, it just converged on me. It all began last Sunday when I flew to SFO I left the apartment at 8:30 and didn't get to my destination until 6pm. (One car ride, several lines, one coach, one bus and some walking). Then I took a red eye back on Wednesday and arrived very early Thursday morning. I got up and went to work for a day and a half. Friday evening Brian and I left for Steve's place near the Kentucky border. We arrived a little after midnight central time (thank goodness I was still on CA time, as I was driving). We stayed there until Sunday afternoon, then trecked back home. Then yesterday I caught what was supposed to be a 6pm flight to HPN (Whiteplanes, NY). It didn't really leave until 8:30 (god only knows when the 8:30 flight left.
I got here and was put up in a palacial room. I slept in a murphy bed for the first time (I think) in my life. When the front dest said this was what type of room I would have they failed to mention the full size couch, 4 chairs and a conference table for 8 also in the room. If it hadn't been for the 5:30 am fire alarm I'd be trying to find a way to extend my stay.
Yes at 5:30 the secound loudest fire alarm I've ever heard went off pretty continuously for 30 minutes. Once I became aware that it wasn't my wake up call, I got dressed and gathered my things and headed outside. No one was very happy. It felt a lot like college my freshman year. Only people were generally in a better state of dress than in college.
Now off to work. I return on Wednesday night and should be able to stay put for a a while.

Asilomar
I'm at yet another conference. This one should be the last until October. After that I'm hoping to take it easy on the conferences for a year. The conference is being held at the Asilomar Conference grounds in Pacific Grove CA. Right on the water, the place was built at the turn of the last century, and is beautiful. As the weather at home was just turning its hot and humid summer self, it has been a nice get a way for a few days.
If only my sinuses agreed with me. They hate me right now -- I don't know why. I've not been particularly mean to them in any way I can think of outside of taking a 5 hour flight to get out here.
The weather has been sunny, the temperature cool and the talks mostly interesting. Tonight I fly home on a red-eye, not fun, but better to then get 6 hours sleep in my own bed then to waste all day on a flight back.
