Georgia Burning

We need rain. We've had virtually no rain the entire month of May, and very little rain since early this year. It is really serios. To make matters worse, the fires burning in southern Georgia send smoke all the way up here -- the air quality outside is horrible.

I'm still programming. Pray that I may sucessfully complete this one day soon.

Tech Interview -- Done

Well I finished my second faculty candidate interview today. I'm not sure how it went. My job talk went well, but the rest of the day was only marginal. I don't really feel like I belong in this or any department so answering some of the questions was hard. My work is not vehicle centric, period. I can attempt (and did) to rationalize how it is vehicle centric, but it isn't.

So there you have it. It was a much more confrontational interview than the other. Probably because no one felt that they had to explain how this place works to me, but they do because as a student you only see half of the tree.

The really bad part is that I probably won't find out about the job search one way or the other until July or August.

Going to Minneapolis

Yes I am going to freeze. I've taken an internship/pre-doc/post-doc with Hone*ywell in Minneapolis. I start on the 4th of September. They will pay me a living wage -- substantially better than a post-doc. Becca will be happy to know that I've secured 12-13 days over Christmas for our southseas adventure > read let the planning begin.

I feel a little light headed now as I have between now and September to finish my work here. But of course as my mother will tell you I work best with a deadline.

2nd Place

Well a few days late, but we received 2nd place. They are really behind and not very good with web stuff because we still don't have a full list of winners. Not bad, it comes with $1500 in prize money which will be split between our 11 members. The good news is that we don't have to go to DC to present it. Would have been fun, but too much work.

Mood Swings

It is amazing to me just how greatly my mood can swing from really low to really high. Right now I'm on a high. First I got an email last night from a colleague who has done me a HUGE favor and created for me some data that I NEEDED to run my experiments and which I did not believe I would be able to track down in any other way.

Then I got to talk with my advisor about my job talk for next week. That went well, now I've got more good ideas on the talk and am feeling better about it.

Plus I found out that I'm going to have funding for this summer which means 1) I get paid 2) it is cool work and 3) there is money for me to run my experiments/pay participants etc.

All this translates into a good mood.

OH and I spoke with Becca last night to find out about her mystery boy. He seems like he makes her happy -- which is very good.

Back to powerpointing now. Must finish up job talk changes so I can practice.

Quiet

The time between semesters is always quiet. Today is especially so as it is before summer semester, very quiet indeed. The weather is also especially nice, so as I took my books back to the library I took my time looking around at the empty space. The campus has reverted to the campus as it was during my undergrad days -- only the student center for food. All coffee located in the COC or Architecture buildings.

Crazy to think it will be like this until August.

Graduated

Well Brian finally graduated last night 12 years after first entering our fine school here. It is very strange when I try to tell my brain that he's not a student any more. What, not a student, what else is there? Other than that not much materially has changed. He'll still go to work in the same place doing fairly much the same tasks. It's just odd when I think about it. When my time comes I'll probably have a remarkably similar feeling.
