Engaged

Well after dating for years and years finally proposed to me the weekend before Christmas. It was all very romantic and as this is a good chance to catch up with friends I haven't gotten to speak to in while, if you want details, call me! Or better yet send me your actual mailing address!

No we have not yet set a date -- the wedding will probably take place sometime in spring 2008. At Becca's urging we are just "basking"/enjoying ourselves (well as much as you can with thesis deadlines). When we do get around to settling on a date we'll send out save the date cards.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas passed off well again this year. My mom was terribly pleased to have Steven back in the country this year. We did our usual activities -- eating, baking, wrapping and shopping. Steve and Dad both had colds this year and so this year we got up rather late. Once we were all assembled the distribution of gifts began. We all made out well and my gifts are well received. I got lots of useful little electronic gadgets and cannot quite decide which one is my favorite. I gave my mother and grandmother pashmina shawls from Dubai. My grandma and I gave my brother a nice blender, which I'm sure he'll put to good use this summer. For my dad it was a new cool mac mouse. It was actually called a migh*ty mouse :) I am still amused at that.

It rained all day here, but not as bad as I think it was in NC. I hope for better weather on Thursday when I drive back. The trip has been too short but there is much work to be done before July.

Christmasy Weekend

Yes, that festive/hectic Christmas time of year is here again. This past weekend Brian's parents came down and we all went to the symphony for a holiday concert. One of my friend's husbands was singing in the choir so pretty much the whole dinner group went -- what with guests and significant others we occupied most of the front row of the 2nd balcony. The concert was magnificent. However the real "fun" started when we got back to the car. We found that our car had been booted -- despite the fact that we had paid to park in the lot. Turns out we had been taken by a phony attendant with selling real parking lot passes. So $65 later we were able to leave the lot. We weren't the only ones, 2 other cars had also been taken in. I'm currently blaming Ameri*park as they were the company whose ticket the phony attendant was selling. To be honest he could easily be a real attendent for Ameri*park, just trying to make an extra buck or two on the side.

That night we drove back to Brian's home town because his father had to go back to work and his mom had driven down with him. We had planned to drive up Sunday so it wasn't too much of a big deal. Sunday we were up early. We walked 2 miles with Brian's mom in the freezing cold with freshly fertilized soil all around... Then we headed out to a christmas tree farm to pick out and cut down our own tree. It was kind of exciting -- except they didn't have too many pine trees or fir trees in GA. We found a really nice white pine, cut him down and took him home.

We had to modify the standard christmas tree stand as the tree had a fairly important low branch that would not fit in the ring. We instead we used zip ties (always handy at Brian's parent's house) in place of the ring. Mr. G isn't too sure this is going to work, but I bet it lasts the season. We then decorated the tree and the "house" We actually only decorated the living room and dining room. But that seemed to be enough.

Why were we decorating their house? Well because Mr. G wanted a christmas tree, and Mrs. G wasn't in the mood to decorate. I've never met someone so easily pleased and yet so unable to please herself. In the end they both got what they wanted, Mr. G got his tree and Mrs. G got to see Brian.

This morning Brian got his teeth cleaned and we headed back to Atlanta and back to work. The festivities continue to night with dinner group gift exchange and tomorrow with SGA christmas dinner. That will bring us to Wednesday and my birthday. Sigh.

Almost Done

Friday I give my final lecture. It is just a review, and considering I spent most of this semester learning how to slow down and stretch material by adding questions, stories and examples I'm not sure if I can cover 50 slides in 55 minutes... I'll just have to cut a bit out.

Its been fun, stressful, frustrating almost all at once. I've been really impressed by my students and then disappointed within the span of a week. I never actually got to the point where I wanted to lock the door and yell at anyone yet, but a good pointed comment or two probably would do a bit of good.

The best part has been hearing how much students have learned in the course and how much they've valued it. For someone who wasn't even sure if she was qualified to teach this course, that is amazing to hear. In my typical overly emotional reaction to things, I've been quite moved by it.

So while I'll be quite relieved next semester to "just" be a TA, I know I will miss having control to teach what I want how I want. No matter what happens with my job search I'm sure I'll get to do it again some day.

They are out

The first round of job applications are out. It took all day.

Just like anything else you spend an insane amount of time on trying to make things perfect, I never want to see these applications again. Nor do I want to be told if there are any typos.

Good week

Last week was a good week. I managed to prep and give two lectures on a topic I had zero prior experience on. I am almost done with my job applications. I'm sending one to UVA, Clemson and U. Wisconsin. In January I'll send one to VT and probably GT. So fingers crossed everyone. I did some other stuff last week, but it seemed to have been minor compared to those things.

This weekend was great. On Friday I went over to Shannon's house and baked cookies with some other friends. Then on Saturday I made a pilgrimage to the contai*ner store to look for cute containers to hand out cookies this year. They had so many over-priced cute things it was devistating. Who ever heard of spending $9 on wrapping paper. It was beautiful, but not $9 beautiful. The only person worthy of that price is my grandmother because she actually unwrapps presents with the full intention of re-using the paper.

I did manage to find a few things within in an acceptable price range. If you are in a similar situation, Wally world actually has a surprisingly good assortment of tins and what not.

Then Saturday evening I got to go to a Dix*ie Chicks concert. The ticket came to me last minute because of a conflict of another friend which allowed me to snag the unused ticket. (The concert was originally scheduled for October) The concert was really good. They played mostly songs that I knew and those that I didn't I liked. What was amazing was that they sang/played for almost two hours straight without an intermission.

Sunday Brian and I both worked. It was actually nice not to have somewhere to go or something to do that night. Next weekend is equally busy with a birthday party on Friday, a concert on Saturday and then a possible trip to the Brian fatherland to decorate on Sunday... Craziness. But first I must get through the long list of stuff for this week!
