Survival
Thanksgiving was good. Lots of food, family, football and sleep. Now of course despite working while at home I have a pile of stuff which needs to be done by the end of the week. I've gone from tranquility to craziness in less than 12 hours.
Oh and now I have to go find someone to hire me for the spring semster. I hate looking for money this way. How do you ask for a job while making it fairly clear that you'd like the job with the fewest commitments so that you can finally get your work done and graduate? I've got two more semesters to go and if I don't get this right it could be at least another two... GRRR. All this means that there will be no TV for Karen this spring.

Mom's annual balsam bit offering of Christmas cheer
This morning I hear a knock at our front door. Now I'm fairly sure it isn't the neighbors because 1) it was at the front door and 2) the person used the little knocker, not their knuckles. So I go downstairs to find a large box. This can only hold one thing -- mom's annual balsam bit offering of Christmas cheer to Brian and I. But why, I ask myself, did my mother ship this to arrive today/this week at all, knowing that I'm not going to be home after today?
So I call the source of the problem. My mother claims that she is completely innocent having only ordered said "tree" on Sunday and was told by the almighty LLBean website that shipping would take 5-7 days. So then I called LLBean and asked them why a package that should take 5-7 days arrived in less than 2. I was thusly informed that ordinary shipping would be 7-10 days and that the purchaser, had chosen expedited shipping. I've decided not to call mom back, but just to interrogate her once I get home.
My poor little tree is going to be parched by the time I get back on Monday, sigh.

Travel Update
Well I'm back now from my travels. Both Denver and Dallas were nice, not that I really got to see much of the cities themselves. Mostly I worked 11 hour days and then came back to my hotel room to veg. So not much sight seeing was done -- plus it would have all have been in the dark. Denver was beautiful (or atleast the outskirts were).
Here you can see the the view to the East. The pointy bits are the airport terminal.
The view to the West.
Oh, and instead of squirels, they have rabbits in Colorado. Very cute.
Finally we have sunrise over DFW.

DFW
So, the designers of DFW were clearly opposed to all conventional airport design. I spent some part of last night attempting figure out how to get to the airport hotel (inside the airport grounds). I got directions from the rental car agency which put me on an access road with clearly no way to get where I needed to go. I eventually had to leave the airport (which by the way has toll boths on either side of the road that runs through it). I eventually found a place to turn around and try again. In the process I managed to skid my rental car -- I kid you not. I actually had to pump my breaks because it had begun to sprinkle here which made the road much slicker than I would have thought possible.
I finally did find my way back to the hotel, but first I had to stop at a toll plaza where instead of taking money they handed me a card. Strange I thought. Then when I got to the hotel parking lot, the gate asked for a card instead of giving me one. Very strange. It took about 3 minutes for me to figure out that it wanted the card I had gotten at the toll booth. I was then finally able to park and check into the hotel. Stupid DFW.
At least the hotel is nice.

Off to Denver
When it rains it pours. Shortly after securing my trip to Dallas I also finally managed to secure my trip to Denver. So I leave tonight for Denver and will be there through Saturday. From there I fly home spend about 18 hours in Atlanta and then fly off to Dallas. I'll be in Dallas through Wednesday. Then I'll be in Atlanta from Thursday until mid day Tuesday when I fly home for Thanksgiving. Speaking of which I'll be in the DC area for thanksgiving in case anyone else will be in the DC area and wants to meet up.
So, needless to say I'll be out of town and in different timezones.
I'm really excited though because this is a vital piece of my thesis and I'm glad to have the chance to get it in before the end of this semester.

Dallas Anyone?
Well I've been trying to get down to Dallas to do some more observations and it looks like I'll finally be getting my wish. I'll be in Dallas from the evening of the 12th through the evening of the 15th of November -- not much time I know. But still if anyone I know is in Dallas and would like to meet up for dinner let me know. I would have liked to have extended my time but I went from agreeing that the 12-15 would be good dates to being informed that my tickets had already been booked. Not much time/room for negotiation.
In other news work goes well but slowly. I'm going to the WLC tonight -- can anyone believe how long it has been since we were really involved with it.
Also is anyone going to Reno this year?
