Back from Seattle
Seattle 2pm Temp 78F
Atlanta 10pm Temp 88F
Where do you think I'd rather be right now?
The trip was great, and if anyone ever gets out that way again with a really cool car, I recomend S178th St. It has a hill with a 21 degree grade on it that curves back and forth. It is so steep they had to modify one of the standard signs to say 21 degrees.

Seattle
I arrived in Seattle last night around 8pm local time. I just have to say that if you can fly into Seattle at sunset on a sunny day, sit on the left hand side of the plane. By pure luck I was on the correct side and got to see the most beautiful scenery. It made me sad that the outside of the windows were so streaky. The mountains rose out of the mist like something out of an asian painting. The major peaks reflected the sun off of their snow covered summits. It was simply amazing.
Of course it was hot when I got here. And then there is the new-airport-looking-for-the-rental-car-counter confusion. I finally got into my hotel around 9pm PST, or around 12 EST and went to bed.
I'm in Seattle to do some observations at Alaska Airlines. One step closer to finishing up my thesis! Tonight I'm meeting Jen and Irwin for dinner -- we still haven't officially finalized where yet. I'm hoping Jen will come pick me up, and save me trying to navigate a new city in a rental car :) Pretty please?

Headache
This morning I reluctantly woke up -- and ever since then my head has been reminding me of just how happy it is with that decision. I've got a pounding headache. It is probably from dehydration. Brian and I went to see a Paul Si*mon concert last night and were outside in the heat from 5:30-10:30. We split a bottle of wine and had a cup of water between us in addition. It's just hard to drink water if it isn't cold and our water just didn't stay cold. Next time must freeze water to take. The concert was in Chast*ain Amphitheater and we had lawn seats. The place was completely sold out, not a patch of grass to be had anywhere! So even though we could have gone to buy water, we would have had to trample on about 50 people to do so.
I'm frantically drinking water this morning, and have taken some motrin. Just want head to stop pounding!

Hot & Humid
This past weekend Brian and I did something unusual. We actually went somewhere for the weekend. We headed out to Charleston, SC, which I highly recommend anyone visit in either the spring, fall or winter. The summer is NOT, I repeat, NOT a good time to go. Of course the fact that it was one of the hottest weekends on record didn't help. Basically we sweated the whole weekend. Not just a little sweat -- I'm talking about sweat that pours (not drips) down your arms, chest, back, legs etc.
I've not gone through our pictures yet, but I'll let you know when I post them. It was nice to be back home for once. It was just as hot here, but not nearly so humid!

Moving Forward
Yes, finally after much delay I finally got to talk with my supervisor about my thesis work, and about a journal paper which needed to be re-submitted. I feel I can finally proceed. So this morning has been very productive. I've gotten a journal paper revision turned around in less than 8 weeks and days before a deadline -- which is a minor miracle around here. Now if only the reviewers would show me the same curtesy. Last time I submitted the paper in December and I didn't get the reviews back until MAY!
Now on to other stuff.

Back from the dead
So last week was completely consumed with writing a series of NA*SA proposals. Only our most brilliant scientific agency would decide to post a huge call for proposals with all of the mone for aeronautics for the comming 5 years in one place. We had 1 month to write them all (20 pages each) and turn them in. Only we couldn't turn them in ourselves, they had to be turned in by the GRC, so parts were actually due earlier -- yeah right. On Monday I worked 8 hours, Tuesday -nada, Wednesday 12 hours, Thursday 14 hours, and Friday 6 hours (starting at 6am). Then I crashed.
After a weekend of arts and crafts, vegging out in front of world cup TV, a hair cut, grocery store trip and two full nights of sleep, I am better now. Still got stuff to do, but it should be stuff I want/need to do instead of stuff that I'm doing for others.
Oh and it looks like I will be in Seattle from the 22nd-27th of July if anyone up there is around.

Peachtree Race
So, as you may have already heard from Sarah, we both survived yesterday's race. 6.2 miles of official race and probably another 3 of walking either to the race, to the start, or from the finish. We did pretty well finishing in 1:12:03. Not bad considering we didn't start running the race until 8:45 am when the temperature was probably in the 80s and didn't finish until almost 10 when the temperature (and full sun) were most certainly in the mid 80s.
We had a pretty good time, had to dodge lots of walkers. If I ever do this race again I'm going to pray for a much lower number as it would have been easier to run with fewer people in front of us, and at an earlier and cooler time. We randomly ran into lots of people we knew, which was nice as it would have been impossible to actually try to find people. The masses of humanity were overwhelming.
There should be a few official pictures of Sarah and I on the web soon. When I find them I'll share them.
This is a link to a site with time-lapse photography of the race. Sarah and I were in the middle of the last pack of people. We are on the right hand side of the shot. Sarah's got on a flag bandana, and I have a hat on. See if you can find us, and enjoy the music.
