Joy and a first step
Today after power came back on and the internet followed a few hours later, I learned that the elections in Iraq went well. Turn out in 2/3 of the country was really high. While I was listening I couldn't help smiling and admiring a people willing to vote dispite threats of death. One person put it best when he answered the question, "what do you say to people who threatened to kill you if you vote." He said, "let me vote first, then you can kill me." It is this kind of courage put forth by ordinary men and women that gives me hope that Iraq will quickly take back their country.

Banging my head...
As I type I am sitting in my stats class, bored out of my mind. I think that even the TA is bored. We've all got lots of legitimate questions, the poor TA, he just isn't up to answer some of them. This is one of those classes where we go through examples really slowly then everyone goes really fast through the homework to get done, and no one learns much. Sigh.
Oh and an ice storm is about to come down on Atlanta. I feel the sudden and over whelming urge to run to Kroger to buy milk and bread ;)

2 Down 2 To Go
Yesterday I finished up my second paper of the season :) I'll send that paper off on Friday (the deadline) after letting it settle a bit and making sure I've searched sufficiently for typos etc. Of course, paper 3 is also due Friday. Yesterday (with only 2 days to work) Amy, Anuj and I sat down to discuss what should go into the paper... Sigh. I will have to remember this story so that I can tell it when I am older. "I remember when my supervisor gave us 2 days to write a conference paper..."
In other news, I'm about to cause ripples again in the Tech community. What am I all excited about now? Rights for grad students, or put better parity between the benefits extended to "normal staff" and student staff. For too long this subtle discrimination has gone un-checked. All this is about to change ;) Why, can't I ever leave well enough alone?

Why I love Matlab
Yes, I'm not ashamed to say that in the past 2 versions and 5 or so releases matlab has gotten to be pretty sophisticated and almost user friendly. Or maybe I've just been using it long enough that it has warped my sense of logic. Either way it was my hero this weekend with Amy's programming assignment.
It was your typical first simulation or numerical integration class assignment. Integrate a function using a bunch of different techniques and plot the differences. But of course Amy had to take it to a higher level, everything had to be modular. Sigh. So I quickly gave up trying to program it in C as it would require pointers to functions, which I am absolutely clueless about. And converted to Matlab. 14 hours later and I'm almost done!

Homework
Ack, I have homework again, that will require me to work when I'd normally be home. I'm really brindling at the thought of this. I'm just too old to want to work 70-80 hours a week for silly classes. Brian asked me which class I was going to drop then, but I don't want to drop any of my classes. I like all of the ones I'm signed up for this semester. I just keep telling myself that after I get these 3 papers out (by the middle of February) I'll everything will settle down.

Small Print
I hate small print. It should be eliminated from the world, like other horrible diseases. I got myself and Brian all excited about taking a map and compass day trip with ORGT, finally remembered to bring in my checkbook, and had a spare moment to fill out the forms only to see in small print that: the day trip must be taken with the overnight trip, and because of the overnight portion (which we don't want to take) we therefore need to have taken Beginner School prior to this. Grr.
Of course none of this was on their website... Sigh. So now we can only take it if there are openings. So I have to go back sometime and put our names down on the waiting list.
Oh, and I have homework again. Becca you should call sometime soon and let me know about your progress.

Running Around
The goal of this semester is to make friends, female friends. I figure with all of the classes that I am taking and with all of the women in them surely I'll be able to make at least one or two friends. This is almost a drop dead deadline because after this I probably won't be taking many courses.
I spent 5 hours in class again yesterday. Sigh... By the end of the day my brain was fried. I'm just getting too old for this kind of thing ;)
In other news I'd like to extend my congratulations to Sarah!! I'd send you a gift certificate to a massouse if I only knew your schedule. Maybe I'll just ask Becca to send you a large tube of BenGay.

Welcome to the new site
Yes, as I have said before, envy and an incredible deal on web-hosting have lead me to creat my own website. It might look a little like Becca's which is because I had to borrow here templates to make sense out of the cascading style sheets. I might continue to update things in the comming weeks, but then again we might be stuck with this design for a while as I get busy with school. So I hope you like it. Please send any design ideas on to me.
